Name:  'Tutul' in Indonesian & Javanese, means spotted & they call leopards 'macan tutul'. Whilst 'maculata' in Latin also means spotted. In the west, the common name is Tiger Bamboo, referring to the linear nature of the spots which seem to wrap around the stems creating stripes. Either way, tigers or leopards, spots or stripes, they all seem like appropriate names.

Character:  This clumping bamboo (sympodial) species dries with an attractive spotted or mottled coloured texture. Whilst growing, it is a green colour with black markings. However it dries to a cream colour with dark brown markings. It can potentially grow up to around 100mm in diameter & up to 20 Metres in height at full maturity. However, on average it is usually nearer 80 mm in diameter & around 12 Metres in height, when cut on a three year cycle.

General Uses:  Tutul is a very strong bamboo, so can be used for construction purposes as well as a variety of hand crafts, like furniture & basketry. It has also been used for lamination into boards or timbers. As a living plant it can also be used for soil erosion control, hedging, live fencing, screening & as fodder for live stock.

Sourcing:  All of our bamboo is grown in Java, Indonesia. Mostly in our local area of Blitar, East Java but also from Central area's & West Java if required. It is sustainably managed & cut by hand, using only hand tools.

Harvesting:  All our bamboo poles are harvested by hand, using hand tools. The side shoots are removed & are then cut to length before been transported to our drying area for seasoning. They are mostly cut during the 'dry' season, which makes the bamboo more durable, less prone to damage, easier to handle & quicker to season.

Seasoning:  For a period of 2 months, the bamboo is slowly rotated as it dry's to avoid any discolouration & to ensure that they are evenly dried. The poles are heat straightened during this period as well if required.

Storage:  Once they have been seasoned, they are dry stored in well ventilated units off of the ground, in small stacks to avoid any crushing & to maintain straightness.
